Dr. Minor Carson Lile photo album, 1908/1917

This collection contains one leather-bound photo album compiled by Dr. Minor Carson Lile between 1909 and 1917. It includes thirty-nine black and white photographs, many with captions or initials that provide a snapshot of life at the University. Photographs include images of the Routunda, Pavilion X, Birdwood, a baseball game at Lambeth Field with Minor playing third base, family photographs of the Liles participating in activities on the Lawn, and horseback riding on Grounds. A picture of young John Allison Lile on horseback against the famed serpentine walls of UVA. Also included are photographs of Minor and his future wife, Gretchen Edgar, in Flordia and Edgar's family estate, Birdwood. Of note are two sports photographs towards the back of the album. One depicts a baseball game at Lambeth Field, roughly around 1912 or 1913, and the third baseman is potentially Minor Carson Lile. One is a shot from the Virginia at Georgetown football game on November 13, 1909. During this game, Virginia running back Archer Christian sustained a fatal head injury as a result of a tackle. An "x" is placed above Christian's head in the photograph. Many photographs of or including Minor are labeled with a handwritten "M.C.L."

This collection contains one leather-bound photo album compiled by Dr. Minor Carson Lile between 1909 and 1917. This collection contains war materials and materials related to the University of Virginia both donated by Joel Gardner. The war memorabila is from the eighteenth to the twenty-first century including a certification that Sergeant James Goldsmith served in the Continental Army in 1781; a letter dated July 8, 1862 requesting permission to form a "Company of 'Partisan Rangers" from the Confederate States Army; a photograph of Neville Chamberlain and Adolf Hitler following a September 24, 1938 meeting; and a swatch of fabric from a life raft used by Francis Gary Powers after being shot down while on a surveillance mission to the Soviet Union in 1960.
