[Acknowledges receipt of his letter; regrets that Rideing missed the production of Elainebut speaks of a spring production in Boston; wishes he could think of something to do for the Youth's Companion, perhaps a story sometime would be best; asks Rideing to get Mr. Upham's opinion of the game "Crit"; says he and Walter Learnedmay publish it.]

[Encloses an outline of a new novel, Martha Dane, which he proposes for Lippincott's Monthly Magazine; mentions that the novel they previously discusses will be too long for the purpose; discusses his preparation to write Martha Dane, its proposed length, and its representation of his best; explains why he did not send an outline sooner and why he is not now sending the first two chapters; discusses Stoddart's contract offer and what he feels would be more reasonable; insists on the night to publish the novel in volume form after three months; says that, if Stoddart accepts these new terms, he could send copy for the whole book in six weeks to two months.]

[Refers to the aftermath of a consecration ceremony, during which he was "pulled . . . thro' the crowd of 'obstructionist' women"; expresses concern over what happened to Malone in the process; encloses a notice of his forthcoming book of poems ( Days and Dreams?), and a card to the private showing of the Society of American Artists; mentions Mr. Collier, James D. Lynch. ]
