Background
- Scope and content:
-
The Virginia Room Gravestones Storage Records contain correspondence, notes, photocopies, cemetery reports, a photograph and other documentation of Fairfax County gravestones that were once stored in the Virginia Room for temporary safekeeping. Subjects include cemeteries of Fairfax County, Virginia.
- Biographical / historical:
-
At one point during the Virginia Room’s history, the library provided storage for gravestones for temporary safekeeping. Some gravestones were found in long forgotten family cemeteries, others were found in the middle of nowhere. This collection consists of documentation pertaining to the gravestones that the Virginia Room once temporarily safe-guarded. The majority of the gravestones in the collection have since been transferred to the Fairfax County Park Authority and they are now stored at the James Lee Center facility in Falls Church, Virginia. The gravestones for William B. Skinner and Winnefred E. Ratcliffe were transferred to the Fairfax Museum for eventual return to the Ratcliffe Family Cemetery (FX088). The Walter J. Johnson gravestone was discarded since it was a maker’s reject and deemed insignificant.
