Background

Scope and content:

The collection consists of a deed for 300 acres on Sinking Creek of the New River in Montgomery County, Virginia, granted to John Rittenhour, assignee of Michael Drake. The deed includes the signature of Virginia's 10th Governor, Robert Brooke.

Biographical / historical:

Robert Brooke (ca. 1751/1761-1800) was the 10th Governor of Virginia from 1794-1796 (Republican). After being governor, he became attorney general of the state.

Michael Drake was born in 1755 in Montgomery County, Virginia, and died in 1798. He married Jane Davison.

No information is available on John Rittenhour (possibly Ridenhour).

John Rittenhour Deed was donated to Special Collections in September 1976.
