The collection consists of pages from an account book, bills, notes, and correspondence relating to John T. Cowan's personal and business affairs.

Biographical / historical:

John T. Cowan was born in Clarksburg, Virginia (now West Virginia). He was a member of the original board of trustees for the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech). He served with the Confederacy in the Civil War and represented Montgomery County, Virginia, in the legislature. He raised shorthorn cattle in Whitehorn, Virginia.

The John T. Cowan Papers collection was acquired prior to 1969.
Processing information:

The processing, arrangement, and description of the John T. Cowan Papers was completed in 1969. Additional description was completed in April 2011.
