    <head>Biographical Note </head>
<p>John T. Cowan was born in Clarksburg, Virginia (now West Virginia). He was a member of the original board of trustees for the Virginia Agricultural and Mechanical College (now Virginia Tech). He served with the Confederacy in the Civil War and represented Montgomery County, Virginia, in the legislature. He raised shorthorn cattle in Whitehorn, Virginia.</p>  </bioghist>
