The Armstead L. Robinson papers(1848-2001; 43 cubic feet) consist of audiotapes; book reviews; census material; computer printouts; conference papers; correspondence; biographical information; instructional material; lectures and speeches; manuscripts and original writings by Robinson, his colleagues and students; maps; memorabilia; microfilm; organizational and professional files; photographs; printed items, and research and topical files. Most of the nineteenth century material is in the form of photocopies.

This collection contains a carte de visite of Fannie Virginia Casseopia Lawrence, a formerly enslaved child. The caption states "A Redeemed Slave Child, 5 years of Age. Redeemed in Virginia by Catherine S. Lawrence; baptized in Brooklyn, at Plymouth Church by Henry Ward Beecher in May 1963. Entered according to Act of Congress in the year 1863, by C. S. Lawrence, in the Clerk's Office of the District Court of the United States, for the Southern District of New York." Photographed by the Kellogg Brothers, Hartford, Connecticut.

This collection contains the ledger from Liggon's Prison, the first Confederate prison for Union prisoners of war, kept by the prison's commander, Lieutenant James Thomas Watt Hairston. Although the ledger contains 272 pages of text, the pages are stamped 1–288 due to skipped numbers.

This collection contains a receipt log (18"X22") of provisions given to the African American infantry during the Civil War. The top of the document states that 'WE, the undersigned Non-commissioned Officers, Artificers, Musicians, and Privates, of [Co "F" 117th U.S. C.S.], do hereby acknowledge to have received of [Capt Riley I. Griffith] the several articles of clothing set opposite our respective names." There are about sixty-five names listed. The receipt includes the date of issue (Dec. 30, 1864), name and designation of the soldier, the types of clothing (privates, trousers, flannel shirts, caps, rubber pouches, and blouses, etc) with signatures of the recipients, and the witness signature of Robert B. Parker, 1st Lt. On the verso is printed "Statement exhibiting the allowance of clothing to each soldier during his enlistment ... as established by the Secretary of War."

This collection contains two muster rolls documenting the officers and enlisted men of Company A, 19th Regiment of United States Colored Troops (USCT), while stationed at Chaffins Farm, Virginia, during the final year of the Civil War.
