Features indicated on the maps include: roads (US, primary state roads, secondary state roads); state, county, district, and corporate lines; railroads; streams; parks and forests; highway bridges; county seats; cities and villages; lodges; farms; houses; businesses; oil and gas wells; commercial airfields; schools; churches; mines; power plants; factories; hotels; and other information.

There are also photographs of the West Virginia landscape (most notably the eastern panhandle), unidentified landscapes, archaeological artifacts, the Paul H. Price family, and other material. Records of Engineer Roland P. Davis, who was associated with the College of Engineering at West Virginia University, serving as a professor (1911-1932), and later as Dean (1932-1955). These papers document his work as a consultant, including work for the State Road Commission as a "Consulting Bridge Engineer". There are extensive records and photographs regarding bridges in West Virginia, including the New Martinsville Bridge, the Parkersburg suspension bridge, and others. There are also published reports regarding West Virginia highways, and many product prospectuses in connection with concrete, rivets and bolts, steel, and welding, among other topics. Box 1 contains biographical information regarding Roland P. Davis.

Subjects include descriptions of Clarksburg, schools, churches, and family affairs. Included are three scrapbooks of the Mortimer W. Smith family, covering family history, and typescripts of speeches made by Smith, 1936-1939, as chief engineer of the West Virginia State Road Commission and as director of the Motor Carrier Department, Public Service Commission of West Virginia.
