Lewis F. Powell Jr. Papers 1921-1998

Abstract Or Scope

The Lewis F. Powell Jr. Papers document the life of this Richmond, Virginia attorney and Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The papers span the years 1921-1998(some few items of family history pre-date this period)and document his legal career; military service in World War II; leadership positions in varied civic and professional organizations; and friendships and family relations. Documentation of his work as an attorney is limited, as client files remain with his former law firm, Hunton & Williams. At one hundred forty two cubic feet, Supreme Court case files, 1972-1987, constitute almost half of the collection.

M. Caldwell Butler Papers 1945-2006

Abstract Or Scope

The M(anley)Caldwell Butler Papers consist of approximately 96 cu. ft. of materials from 1925-2006. Most of the papers cover the periods 1972-1982 and 1995-1997. The papers are divided into seventeen series: June Nolde Butler papers; correspondence and subject files; military service; appointment calendars; campaigns; scrapbooks, clippings and photos; speeches; newsletters, press releases, radio reports and weekly reports; voting record; constituency correspondence; confirmation of Gerald R. Ford as Vice President; impeachment of President Richard M. Nixon; Bankruptcy Reform Act of 1978; Legal Services Corporation; re-authorization of the Department of Justice for the Fiscal Year 1982; Voting Rights Act extension; the National Bankruptcy Review Commission, 1995-1997; and Artifacts, 1944-1998. With the exceptions of the first six series and National Bankruptcy Review Commission materials, these papers were generated during Butler's terms as U. S. Representative for the 6th Congressional District of Virginia, 1972 -1982 (93rd Congress - 97th Congress).

Earl Gregg Swem Library records

Abstract Or Scope

This collection includes both processed series and unprocessed accessions of records created by the Earl Gregg Swem Library at the College of William and Mary including those from component offices and individual staff members. A majority of the collection contains correspondence from the dean of the libraries and library administration. Inventories for some series and accessions are available in the Special Collections Research Center and links to PDFs of those inventories can be provided when available.

Abstract Or Scope

The papers of Homer Stille Cummings consist of 171.2 feet (ca. 124,000 items) of correspondence, memoranda, diaries, speeches, articles, legal case files, daily schedules, photographs, daguerreotypes, engravings, newspaper clippings, scrapbooks, films, phonograph records, memorabilia, and other items, for the years 1850 (1890-1956) relating to Cummings' long career as lawyer, Democratic Party leader, and attorney general in the administration of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Family, legal, political, and official papers reflect Cummings' far-ranging activities and interests; the value of the papers lies in their unusual scope and breadth. The collection includes Cummings' correspondence, telegrams, and memoranda with Woodrow Wilson and Franklin D. Roosevelt, and a group of papers that document his role in the historic court-packing struggle.
