Special Collections includes manuscript collections, rare books, and the University Archives, as well as state, local and historical maps and photographs. The collection contains a letter sent from Tazewell, Virginia, in 1882 by A. H. and William Gibboney to W. R. Wharton, Esquire, concerning the breach of payment for workers that have left the corps of the Norfolk and Western Railroad (previously the Atlantic, Mississippi and Ohio Railroad).

A Historical Map of Virginia. GHQ Committee of the Kappa Alpha order 0.1 Cubic Feet 10 x 15 in.

Map comes from a convention held by the Kappa Alpha Alumni Foundation, and it shows locations of historical interest, especially Jamestown, Yorktown, and various battlefields. Reverse of map contains photographs of historical monuments and locations, as well as a description of the convention.

A. Jane Duncombe Architectural Papers 2 Cubic Feet

Duncombe, A. Jane, 1925-

The A. Jane Duncombe Architectural Papers span the years 1952 to 2002. The papers consist primarily of architectural drawings, as well as some printed material including plan sheets, articles, and printouts of digital images. The collection documents various residential and other projects upon which Duncombe worked, one in Illinois and the rest in California.

A. J. Davis Family Collection 5.7 Cubic Feet 5 boxes

Davis, Albert John, 1854-1935
The A. J. Davis Family Collection includes journals; scrapbooks; professional and biographical information; photographs, sketches, and ephemera; and a town history. The journals (1874-1927) contain memoirs, particularly of Davis' army experiences, as well as some writing exercises, poetry, stories, and religious observations. Scrapbooks compiled by A. J. Davis include newspaper clippings, personal reflections, and a stamp collection. The professional and biographical information includes service records from Davis' time in the army, genealogy information compiled by other family members, and last wills and testaments. The collection also includes a 19-page history of Woods Hole, Massachusetts, authored by Davis, as well as a draft of the Book of A. J. Davis and other manuscripts. The collection also contain pictures of Davis and his wife.

Alan Campbell Cameron Papers 0.3 Cubic Feet 1 box

Cameron, Alan Campbell, 1895-1960
The collection includes the papers of World War I fighter pilot Alan Campbell Cameron (1895-1960) of Riverside, Cook County, Illinois, including letters from relatives and friends, primarily his father John M. Cameron (1867-1939), a Chicago attorney at the law firm of Custer and Cameron, and Dorothy Abbott, a romantic interest of Cameron during his school years. The letters document Cameron's life as a college student, his service as an aviator in the war, and his post-service years while leasing the Sanford Hotel in San Pedro, California. The collection also includes Chicago Daily Tribune clippings.

Alberta Pfeiffer Architectural Collection 10.3 Cubic Feet 15 boxes, 3 oversize folders

Pfeiffer, Alberta Raffl, 1899-1994
Alberta Pfeiffer graduated from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1923 as one of the first women to achieve a degree in architecture at that institution. The collection contains drawings, photographs, and correspondence of her architectural career. Most projects are residential, and the collection consists of approximately 250 different designs for various jobs.
