Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains five legal agreements relating to the Alabama Great Southern Railroad Company. Included are agreements for the joint use of rail lines with Georgia Pacific Railway; the Anniston & Cincinnati Railroad; and the Cahaba Coal Mining Company. Also included is an agreement with the Georgia Pacific and the South & North Alabama Railroad for the joint construction and operation of Union Passenger Station in Birmingham, Alabama; and a statement regarding an attempt by the Louisville & Nashville Railroad to circumvent its agreement with the constituent companies of the Queen and Crescent Route on passenger traffic rates.

Biographical / historical:

The Alabama Great Southern Railroad was established in 1877, through the reorganization of the Alabama and Chattanooga Railroad. Controlling interest in the company was sold in 1890 to the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia Railway and the Richmond and Danville Railroad, and the line eventually became part of the Southern Railway system, which in turn became part of the Norfolk Southern Corporation.
