Description:

The Albert and Shirley Small Special Collections Library administers over 13 million manuscripts, 3.6 million items in the University archives, and 325,000 rare books, as well as approximately 5,000 maps, over 4,000 broadsides; more than 250,000 photographs and small prints; over 8,000 reels of microfilm; and substantial holdings of audio recordings, motion picture films, and ephemera.

The major emphasis of the Department’s collections are American history and literature, with additional substantive collections in Virginiana, British literature, African-American history, book arts, the history of sporting and World War I, among others. In addition, the library serves as the University Archives, holding records of historic significance to UVA.

Abuse of psychiatry and psychiatrists 12.5 Linear Feet 24 boxes

This series consists of subject files that Dr. Loren Henry Roth assembled and used while working to stop the abuse of psychiatry and psychiatrists for political reasons, emphasizing abuse in the former Soviet Union. The files contain correspondence, memoranda, meeting documents, articles, reports, lists, forms, evaluations, photographs, diaries, and other materials.

This collection contains essays and papers related to the history of the University of Virginia compiled by Alexander G. "Sandy" Gilliam, a University of Virginia alumnus, administrator, and historian. The content dates range from 1921 to 2019. Correspondence and greeting cards between Gilliam and University administrators, historians, and alums are present, as are forty special interest essays written by Gilliam on obscure University of Virginia historical subject matter. The essays discuss historical maps of the University, University Presidents, road nomenclature, secret societies, the history of buildings, the Rotunda, the Lawn, University faculty, and the evolution of student life. Also included are programs from University dinners, building grand openings, groundbreaking ceremonies, Final Exercises, dedications, funerals, on-Grounds weddings, and other events collected by Gilliam.

This addition to MSS 10553, American Rhododendron Society Papers (Records), contains newsletters of the American Rhododendron Society (ARS), primarily from 2019 to 2021. The newsletters document various regional chapters across the United States and British Columbia, Canada, Oregon, California, New York, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Washington, Hawaii, and Maryland. Titles include Rhododendron News, The Blue Ridge Review, Macrophyllum, Viva Vireya, Cal Chapter News, Rhody Runner, Mid-Atlantic Rhododendron News and Notes, and AtlanticRhodo. Also included are the "Azalea Blooms" newsletter, the Azalea Chapter of the American Rhododendron Society, and the Mason-Dixon Chapters from 2017 to 2019.

American Society of Pediatric Nephrology records 7.625 Linear Feet (11 containers)

This collection consists of materials that chronicle the business dealings of the American Society of Pediatric Nephrology (ASPN) as well as the professional work of some of its members from ca. 1955-2022. Documents include but are not limited to correspondence, administrative records, planning and event materials, newspaper clippings, and photographs. The materials also include CD-ROM discs, VHS tapes, and cassette tapes containing photographs, email correspondence, audio and video recordings of events and lectures, event and planning materials, and other professional documentation related to the ASPN. In addition, the accession contains professional papers of individuals affiliated with the ASPN: Jose Strauss, Adrian Spitzer, William Segar, Chester Edelmann, Billy Arant, and F. Bruder Stapleton. Professional papers include but are not limited to publications, correspondence, photographs, article drafts, and research outlines.

Annual reports

This series consists of annual reports produced by the Medical Library (1929-1975), the Health Sciences Library (1975-Present), and the Information Sciences Council (1990-1996). Annual reports for the Health Sciences Library are missing from this collection for the period from 2006 to the present. Also, the annual reports for the Medical Library are missing from this collections for the period from 1929 to 1942. It is unclear whether the Medical and Health Sciences libraries wrote reports for the years.
