Jenkins, Samuel R. (b. 1870)
Eighteen diaries, 1890-1934, of Samuel R. Jenkins, a civil engineer from Grafton. There are lengthy entries for the period, 1890-1892, when Jenkins was a student at West Virginia University. He did surveys and supervised construction work in various parts of West Virginia, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey, read widely, and commented on works of Henry George, John W. Draper, and John Fiske. There are photographs of Jenkins and of an engineering job done by him for the American Bridge Company at Ambridge, Pennsylvania, in 1902. There is also a student laboratory manual containing direction for a course of experiments in chemistry.

This collection includes glass plate negatives and film negatives of photographs taken by Scott Gibson of Valley Point, Preston County, West Virginia. These photographs feature a variety of outdoor and indoor scenes, as well as family and individual portraits, mainly in Monongalia and Preston Counties.

Prints and nitrate negatives of photographs taken by Scott Gibson. The first nine boxes contain nitrate negatives, which are numbered and have been organized by subject. Nitrate negative subjects include West Virginia University Athletics, Buildings, Military, etc.; highway markers; historical houses; Monongalia County views; local organizations and businesses; Morgantown buildings and other features; and portraits. Boxes 10-20 include prints, which are not in numerical order or organized by subject. The prints have the same variety of subjects as the nitrate negatives. Over 500 images have been digitized.

Atkeson, Thomas Clark, 1852-1935
Family history, autobiographical sketch, account books of farming operations in Putnam County, West Virginia, 1894-1934, and articles and pamphlets written by a state agricultural leader, founder of the state Grange, and national Grange representative in Washington. Atkeson also played a leading role in the development of the West Virginia University Agricultural College at Morgantown where he was a professor for many years.

Subjects include the history of businesses and individuals in Morgantown and the surrounding area, including the Lemley, Ley, and Robison/Robinson families; West Virginia University (WVU) history; Kiger's real estate career; political campaigns; and Morgantown High School, among others. Personal papers of Hale J. Posten (1904-1983), of Morgantown, West Virginia. Posten graduated from West Virginia University, A.B. (1924) and L.L.B. (1926), and married Mary Eleanor Dill in 1936. He worked as a lawyer, served in the Air Force during World War II, and was president of WVU's Alumni Association from 1968-1969. He was released from active duty as a Lieutenant Commander in 1945. Collection includes photographs, correspondence, clippings, writings, and printed material. Subjects of photographs include the Dill family and student life and football players at WVU in the mid-1920s. Correspondence includes material related to Posten's military service.

Correspondence of the West Virginia State Board of Control, which was responsible for all state correctional institutions, educational institutions, and hospitals from 1909 to 1949. Individuals serving on the three-man board at various times were John S. Lakin, J.W. Barnes, J.A. Chambers, J.S. Darst, Edgar B. Stewart, J.Z. Terrell, W.R. Thurmond, John B. White, and F.W. McCullough. The letters in this collection deal with all state institutioris and their problems. There are letters dealing with building construction, building repairs, the purchase of new property, thehiring of new employees, employees' salaries, institution menus, building insurance, gifts and grants to institutions, and institutional financial matters. Proposals, plans, and correspondence regarding West Virginia University building projects. Includes specifications for Woodburn Hall (1873) and blueprints for the north wing (1897), specifications for the Evansdale Library (1978), and renovation of Colson Hall (1978). There are also floor plans for Purinton House with a sketch of the exterior (ca. 1905). Other items include maps and drawings pertaining to east Morgantown (1901) and the WVU Campus (1971), and several blank diplomas for different schools and colleges within the University. The correspondence is from WVU President Jerome Raymond to architects competing for the contract to design an armory, mechanical hall, and a library with a museum (1899/03/16).
