Background

Scope and content:

Personal papers of Hale J. Posten (1904-1983), of Morgantown, West Virginia. Posten graduated from West Virginia University, A.B. (1924) and L.L.B. (1926), and married Mary Eleanor Dill in 1936. He worked as a lawyer, served in the Air Force during World War II, and was president of WVU's Alumni Association from 1968-1969. He was released from active duty as a Lieutenant Commander in 1945. Collection includes photographs, correspondence, clippings, writings, and printed material. Subjects of photographs include the Dill family and student life and football players at WVU in the mid-1920s. Correspondence includes material related to Posten's military service.

This series includes identified and unidentified photos, mostly family photos and portraits. Includes images of the Dill and Harr families; Reedsville, WV (Dill family home); Miners Memorial Hospital in Fairmont (folder 3); steamboat on the Monongahela River (folder 3); and student life and football players at WVU (1920s).

This series includes wedding invitations, greeting cards, and military material. Military material includes officer rosters of Posten's ship, the U.S.S. Bon Homme Richard; Posten's release from active duty; and addresses of former officers.

Series includes Morgantown newspaper clippings, including images of WVU faculty in 1907 and an article on a donation to WVU by Posten in 1979.

This series includes manuscript and typescript writings and speeches, on topics including Methodism and legal matters.

This series includes a directory of the Naval Training School class of 6-'42 (of which Posten was part); Virginia and West Virginia tourism booklets, and souvenir postcards from California.

This series includes notes, a map of Essex, and ephemera.
