125 issues of The Coal Trade Journal spanning the years 1888-1904. The Coal Trade Journal was established in 1869, and was published in New York under editor F. E. Saward for coal dealers. It contains coal retailer advertisements, notes on the coal market in specific regions, and the current prices of coal domestically and internationally, among other topics.

The collection includes minutes, correspondence, annual as well as other reports, newsletters, newspaper clippings, notes, various publications and other materials. The date range of the collection, from the early 1920's until the present, spans the history of the organization. There seems to be some minutes missing from the years 1939 through 1945.Much of the correspondence from the 1970s focuses on the passage of the Equal Rights Amendment and includes letters to and from Virginia's U.S. Congressional delegation. Numerous regional and state issues are also documented in the collection.

Collection includes a Civil War-era photograph of First Lieutenant Theodore Lewis Apple of Wellsville, Ohio, in his soldier's uniform, a copy of his service record in Company F of the 1st West Virginia Volunteer Infantry for admission into the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States, various ordnance and military inventory documents recorded by Apple during the Civil War, a receipt from Adams Express Company, and a State of West Virginia record of his service from the Adjutant General's Office.

The materials in the The Reverend Dr. and Mrs. Richard Eugene Hager (Anne Peyton Judkins Hager) Collection consists of book manuscripts and unpublished essays, newspaper clippings, land deeds, correspondence, receipts, notes, and copies of wills. Also included are books belonging to the Preston family which include a family Bible, a children's poetry book, and many others. Of particular interest is an 1832 receipt to General Francis Preston (1765-1835) for a subscription to the Saturday Evening Post, writings by Elizabeth Preston Gray about the history of her family, the 1981 nomination of the Aspenvale Cemetary in Smyth County to the National Register of Historic Places, copies of Mary Preston Gray's book manuscript, The Family Tree (about the various family lines), and correspondence from Hatch Dent Poston regarding the sale and purchase of enslaved individuals.

The papers of A. E. Dick Howard reflect his academic and professional endeavors. The archives have received five installments of papers from Professor Howard, plus an entire collection: The Papers of A. E. Dick Howard for the Virginia Commission for Constitutional Revision, received in 1981, MSS 81-4. Papers related to the nomination of Judge Robert Bork to the Supreme Court: these files consist of some reports and statements in relation to the nomination of Judge Robert H. Bork to the Supreme Court. Professor Howard was a commentator on the McNeil/Lehrer NewsHour during the confirmation hearings. Bill O'Brien, a student assistant, helped him to collect all of the information. Addendum [a]: Central and Eastern European New Constitutions: these files relate to Howard's involvement on the writing of new constitutions in Central and Eastern Europe at the collapse of the Soviet Union. The files were processed trying to convey their original organization and consist of correspondence, memoranda, working papers and numerous printed materials.
