Ludwig family

Papers of the Ladwig family. They document the professional and personal lives of medical and teaching professionals in West Virginia in the early twentieth century, includng Dr. Otto Ladwig (1875-1968), his wife Calora Hardway Ladwig (1882-1974), and Margaret and Gertrude Hardway, Calora's sisters. The Ladwigs lived in Harrison and Randolph counties and were active in itinerant logging communities such as Evenwood. There are correspondence, publications, deeds, certificates, and photos of the Ladwig and Hardway families.

Books, periodicals, films, photos, and other papers relating to World War II, United States Army Intelligence, Nazi propaganda, and the post-war denazification program in Germany. Some of the material is in German. Lawrence Nuce, a Kingwood, West Virginia, native was a combat sergeant during the war. During the occupation, he was a commissioned officer in charge of supervising schools in Bavaria. Includes war newspapers, army manuals, occupation and education reports, and other material. The Lemuel C. Shepherd, Jr. papers consist primarily of the following:

  • Photograph albums and scrapbooks dating from Shepherd's years as a VMI cadet, as Commandant of the United States Marine Corps, and from his service as President of the Inter-American Defense Board

The unpublished memoirs include detailed information about Shepherd's early Marine Corps career and his participation in World War I. They include copies of his World War I diary and personal correspondence.

The collection includes correspondence with General Dwight D. Eisenhower, autobiographical material, speeches (1945 to 1948), and photographs. Material complementary to this collection is in Gerow's student/alumni file, which is located in the VMI Archives.

Correspondence, financial papers, diaries, scrapbooks, newspaper clippings, and photographs relating to the Max Mathers family and Monongalia County, West Virginia. The activities of Anna DeGant Mathers, wife of Max Mathers, and Margaret Mathers Barrick, his daughter, as well as of Margaret's two sons, William Mathers Barrick and George Milton Barrick, Jr. are well represented in the family papers. Max Mather's own papers document his personal life, Republican party activities, genealogical and local history interests, and his participation in civil defense planning for Morgantown, as well as his service on the local selective service board. There are letters and financial records of earlier members of the Morgan family, mostly of the Civil War period and later, but including two early 19th century account books and some early letters. Some of the names of Morgan ancestors are Elijah Morgan, Elizabeth Morgan, H.M. Morgan, H.D. McGeorge, N.H. McGeorge, and John R. Morgan. Photographs are largely of the Mathers family, but there are a few of the 175th anniversary of Monongalia County, and the dedication of a monument to Col. Zackquill Morgan, ancestor of Mathers and founder of Morgantown. The newspaper clippings cover personal mentions of Max Mathers and his family as well as local history articles, local events, and the family's involvement in the search for missing soldiers after the Korean conflict. The scrapbook was put together by Eugene L. Mathers, Max Mathers' father, and documents Monongalia County events, 1838-1951. In addition, there is a collection of greeting cards covering the first half of the 20th century and a collection of broadsides going back to the 1850s.

Max R. Decker Diaries 0.01 Linear Foot

Six diaries, 1930-1943 (with gaps) of Max R. Decker describing his life during the Great Depression and World War II. Decker is located in Buffalo, Kansas, but he and his brothers hop freight trains traveling through Nebraska, Colorado, Utah, Kansas and Iowa. The diaries also describe the family searching for work and camping at various locations. The family ends up in Gaither, Arkansas. Decker joined Civilian Conservation Camp # 743 in the Ozark National Forest. The final diary describes his days in the 302nd Battalion of Artillery at Fort Meade, Maryland, Camp A. P. Hill, Virginia and Camp McCoy, Wisconsin.

Kimble, Melvin Harding

Melvin Harding Kimble (1920-1944) was born in Moundsville, West Virginia and served in the 5th Ranger Infantry Battalion during World War II on the Western Front of the European Theater. Kimble was killed in the Battle of the Bulge in 1944 and his body was returned to the United States for burial in 1948. The collection contains photographs of Kimble in military and civilian life, as well as photographs of his family and fellow soldiers. Some of the photographs are accompanied by biographical and genealogical information regarding Kimble. The collection also contains the funeral guest book, or register, from his funeral; this book includes a list of attendees as well as one page of a letter from Kimble to his wife with a "theater of operations" pin attached to the letter.

Material (1931-1957) of a labor organizer including correspondence, reports, handbills, pamphlets, broadsides, newspapers, instruction posters, political and labor buttons. There are court reports involving labor cases for the period 1940-1956. Subjects include Subversive Activities Control Board, integration in labor movement, labor during WW II, labor in southern U. S., communism in labor movement, union constitutions and agreement between industry and unions. See inventory for listing of material in collection.
