A letter from James Calhoun, Williamsburg, to his wife and children describes the Battle of Williamsburg. Calhoun is a member of the 61st Pennsylvania Infantry. The text is written on "Confederate States of America" letterhead. A typescript is included.

Letter by Johnston H. Skelly, New Kent Court House, to his wife about the Battle of Williamsburg and the Peninsula Campaign. He witnesses the burning of the ironclad Merrimack (C.S.S. Virginia).

Diary, 19 March 1862 to 24 August 1862, of Joseph Keith Newell, a captain of the 10th Massachusetts Infantry during the Civil War. Diary runs from March to August of 1862, and describes the life of a Union soldier during the Peninsula Campaign. Describes his trip down the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., to Hampton, Virginia. Also includes a description of the Battle of Williamsburg, 5 May 1862, as well as his observations of the College of William & Mary. Newell also describes his participation in the Seven Days Battles and his time at Harrison's Landing, also known as Berkeley Plantation, in Charles City County, Virginia. Throughout the diary, Newell describes his interaction with slaves who were abandoned as the Union Army approached. There is also a typescript transcription of the complete diary.

Letter written on May 11, 1862 by Sgt. Nathan Cory, a Union soldier, to his brother-in-law, Peter Baley, while Cory was "on the road to Richmond." The letter describes the Battle of Williamsburg, which occurred on May 5th, and mentions that the Union is pursuing the Confederates who left Yorktown shortly after the battle.

Letters 18 March and 17-30 May 1862, written by Ned Hoxie, Camp Brightwood, Washington, D.C. and Baltimore, [Va.] while serving in a Massachusetts Infantry Regiment during the American Civil War. The letters are to his parents, Mr. and Mrs. B. B. Hoxie, Northampton, Massachusetts and concern the fighting in Virginia, the occupation of a Tyler family home, and also mention picking up weapons from the Battle of Williamsburg. The letterhead is stamped with "The Shield of Liberty, 1776-1861" on one sheet and "The Flag of the Free, 1776-1861" featuring Lady Liberty on another.

A letter from Nelson Deraino, 20 miles from Richmond, Virginia, to his aunt and uncle, describing the Battle of Williamsburg. Deraino was a member of the 70th New York Infantry. A typescript is included.

The collection contains letters written by Rufus Robbins, Jr. to family members during the Civil War. In his year and a half of service in the 7th Massachusetts Volunteer Infantry, Robbins freqently wrote to his parents and brothers Henry and Edwin in South Abington, Massachusetts.

The original pencil sketch of Mary Ann Bowden, aged 15 years, was drawn by a Union soldier during the Battle of Williamsburg, May 5-6, 1862. It was presented to Governor Morgan of New York by Lewis Post of Seneca County, New York, on May 26, 1862, Williamsburg College Hospital.
