Scope and content:

Letter by Johnston H. Skelly, New Kent Court House, to his wife about the Battle of Williamsburg and the Peninsula Campaign. He witnesses the burning of the ironclad Merrimack (C.S.S. Virginia).

Biographical / historical:

Johnston H. Skelly was a Union soldier in the 101st Pennsylvania Infantry, and was buried at Gettysburg.

Custodial history:

Acc. 2001.40 was an addition to the Civil War Collection, Mss. 39.1 C76, until November 2017. The former citation was Civil War Collection, Special Collections Research Center, William & Mary Libraries.
