This collection contains images of both African and African American individuals. The subjects photographed include military personnel, men, women, and children. Some individuals were photographed inside of a photographer's studio. The images vary in size and format and range in date from circa 1850s-1945. Each item has a description at the file level.

Sandys-Nelson family photograph albums 1 Linear Feet 2 photograph albums

The collection contains two photograph albums containing images of the Sandys-Nelson family. Images contain those of two formerly enslaved women including Grace Frances and her mother Alice, as well as the family's Irish wet nurse, Maggie Shehee. The leather bound photograph album contains 36 carte-de-visite and tintype photographs. The red padded cloth bound photograph album contains 18 cabinet cards, 23 carte-de-visite photographs, and three tintype photographs.

Tintype photograph of an unidentified man 1 Item

A small tintype photograph of a suited man with a hat taken by Woodrich of Albany, New York. The tintype was discovered during a research survey called BookTraces by a team of scholars from the University of Virginia. The tintype was within a copy of the "Works of William Gilmore Simms."

Vito L. Bianco collection of African American photographs 0.375 Linear Feet 1 Hollinger box

This collection contains one bound album of 18 photographs of African Americans, including children, women, as well as men in military uniforms. Photographs were taken by multiple studios in Virginia including the E.C. Leath Photograph Gallery in Petersburg and the Virginia, Evans and Son Gallery in Norfolk, virginia. Other photographs were produced by New York based studios including Adams Studio and Richard Ward Studio. The photographs include carte de visites, tintypes and postcards.

World War II Correspondence Collection 1.5 Linear Feet

This collection contains more than 700 letters, the vast majority dating to World War II between 1940 and 1945. Each of the first five series deal with numerous letters to/from a primary correspondent, whether husband and wife, family members, or varying levels of acquaintance that date between 1940 and 1945. The final two series contain correspondence and ephemera unrelated to World War II that was included in the collection when purchased.
