Description:

The Washington and Lee University Special Collections and Archives Department houses over 1,000 unique manuscript collections including those of the Rockbridge Historical Society, The American Shakespeare Center, and the Mountain Valley Preservation Association. These collections vary greatly in size, format, and scope. Subjects covered within the collections are diverse and include concentrations in American and Virginia history, regional genealogy, history of propaganda, Southern literature, and theater.

It also houses over 10,000 photographs and prints. Beyond our photograph and print collections, which include scrapbooks, images can also be found within the manuscript collections and University Archives described above. Our photographic holdings vary greatly in size and include numerous formats representative of the evolution of the photographic process. Strengths are local and regional portraiture, landscapes and architecture, W&L University history, including athletics, and late 19th-century travel.

Massie dated 1870. This scrapbook is a typed biography including a letter from Alamby to his sister.

This scrapbook was made by Swanson, the 1956 W&L Mock Convention chairman, featuring photographs and news items regarding the death of Alben W. Barkley while giving the event's keynote address. It includes letters from various senators (including Willis Robertson, Richard B. Russell, and Herman Talmadge) concerning Mock Convention and contains photographs of Sharon Ritchie, Miss America 1956, who attended the convention.

This collection contains principally scrapbooks relating to Bryan's service as U.S. ambassador to Brazil (1898-1902), Portugal (1903-1909), Belgium (1909-1911) and Japan (1911-1912) and containing newspaper clippings, press releases, photographs, postcards, greeting cards and other memorabilia. It also includes a scrapbook of family photographs, political memorabilia, and genealogy as well as political correspondence from 1879-1909.

Presbyterian minister Ebenezer Dickey Junkin's pocket sized bound scrapbook of articles submitted to the Presbyterian Watchman and Observer newspaper by his father, George Junkin, D.D. between 1853-1856. George Junkin, under the pen name Theophilus, wrote the series of letters to the Richmond, Virginia publication on the role of the church in higher education. They include his commentary on the relationship between chuch and government. Junkin penned the letters during his tenure as President of Washington College in Lexington, Virginia. E.D. Junkin titled the scrapbook, "Lux Mundi - A series of newspaper articles on the education question by the Rev. Dr. George Junkin, 1854 or 6"

Edward Miley Eustler scrapbook, 1910/1911

Edward M. Eustler's photographic scrapbook documents his experience while a student at Washington and Lee University from 1910-1911. The scrapbook has approximately 350 photographs. Subjects campus and dorm life, athletics, architecture, local landmarks and historic sights, fraternity and club initiations, the Lexington, Virginia downtown area, the Virginia Military Institute, faculty and staff, local residents such as Jeff Shields and Henry O. Dold, friends, and family. The scrapbook also documents Eustler and others at Camp Ogburn in Summerfield, North Carolina in the summer of 1910 as well as a camping excursion to the summit of North Carolina's Mt. Mitchell in 1911.
