Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Centenary Medal, 1927

Abstract Or Scope
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad Centenary Medal is commemorating the 100th anniversary of the railroad between 1827 and 1927. The medal was presented to Virginia Argricultural and Mechanical and Polytechnic Institute. The metal is round and made of a gold/copper hued metal. On one side, text surrounds the edges of the metal that reads "THE.BALTIMORE.AND.OHIO.RAILROAD.COMPANY.1827.1927." In the middle of the metal is a relief of a steam locomotive, with industrial buildings in the background. Below the relief is the text "PETER COOPERS 'TOM THUMB'." On the other side of the metal, the text around the edges reads "ONE HUNDRED YEARS SAFTEY STRENGTH SPEED." In the middle is a relief of the front of a locomotive curving along the tracks with mountains in the background. Reaching out to the front of the train is the figure of a man who floats in the sky. The Ohio Railroad Centenary Medal is housed inside of a navy box with an attached lid. Inside the box is a brown velvet lining with an insert that holds the medal. A blue ribbbon is placed under the metal to help remove it from the insert.

Map depicting the C & O Railroad network in the Mid-Atlantic and Midwestern states (Michigan, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, West Virginia, Virginia, Washington, DC, and New York. Though undated, the map was issued some time between 1947, when the C & O acquired the Pere Marquette Railway of Michigan and Ontario, and 1972, when it adopted a new corporate name following a merger with the ancient Baltimore & Ohio Railroad.
