Three Early Color Postcards Each with Virginia Scenery

This collection consists of three 1920s era color postcards. One is dated 1937, but the other two are undated. The 1937 card has an image of the Yorktown Monument in Yorktown, Virginia and an image of the Natural Bridge, as well as a poem titled 'Virginia.' It has a message on the back of the card to a Mr. and Mrs. Dowd from Finch. The other two cards contain no messages, but both have images of the Natural Bridge and poems titled respectively 'In Old Virginia' by B. B. Valentine and 'Down in Virginia' by W. D. Mc.

"In White gaze, artist and filmmaker Michelle Dizon works with an archive of National Geographic magazines to explore the mechanics of the 'white gaze.' Through a process of poetic subtraction, Dizon works with only the language on the original page to write a decolonial counterpoint to a way of imaging the world centered on the West. Her images lay the white gaze bare, unearth a genealogy of a racist visuality, and work in the gap between image and text to write against the grain of imperialist narratives. Artist and writer Việt Lê uses Dizon's images from White gaze as a starting point for his poetic exploration of the legacies of war and imperialism. Lê's text performs a dual work, both contextualizing Dizon's images in the history of empire and unleashing a rhythmic play with language, both visually and aurally, to cut to the core of how meaning is produced. His text speaks to absence as much as presence with a story of war and empire told in fragments, phrases, words hanging on the page--an index of both the trauma and resistance experienced by those subjected to the violence of empire"--Bookmark insert.

They were married on February 1, 1806 and had their first child late 1806 or early 1807. The letters to Sally begin when they are courting and end in December 1806.

The papers also include correspondence and documents (1868-1898), Williamson's obituary, and a book owned by Williamson titled "Scott's Infantry Tactics" (Volume III, 1860 edition).

This collection consists of a one volume notebook compiled in 1862 by VMI cadet William J. Hubard. The bulk of the volume contains poetry and mementos. There are also two diary entries. The poetry includes "The Six Plebes" and "The Old Gray Coat" by Sara Henderson Smith, and several poems attributed to cadets Edward A. Rhodes, John F. Hanna, and Benjamin F. Bishop. Subjects of the verses are VMI life and regulations, including many references to faculty members (e.g., Francis H. Smith, Raleigh Colston, John T. L. Preston, William Gilham, Thomas H. Williamson, and Stonewall Jackson). Poetry composed by cadets, includes "Soliloquy of a Rat," "Examination," "The Faculty," "The Rat's Dream," and other poems about cadet life. Mementos consist of autographs and dried pressed leaves presented to Hubard by young ladies. One sprig of cedar is labelled as being from Stonewall Jackson's coffin.
