The bulk of the Andrew C. L. Gatewood papers consist of 28 letters (dated 1860-1864) written by Gatewood to his parents and other family members. Early letters describe life at VMI and in Lexington, Virginia, just prior to and during early months of the Civil War. Subsequent letters date from Gatewood's service with the 11th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, Company F (Bath Squadron), including a letter (dated September 1862) written after the Second Battle of Manassas (2nd Bull Run).

This collection consists of the papers of Dr. Daniel Crump Buchanan on Japanese culture with some information on China, Korea, and other Asian countries generally organized by subject. The files on Japanese culture and history are arranged alphabetically by subject. They contain some significant memos and position papers on propaganda and psychological warfare against Japan during World War II. Other files on similar themes include "Espionage," "Target Operations", and "Reorientation." Also included are manuscripts of Dr. Buchanan's published works, printed matter from Dr. Buchanan's time in Japan, uncataloged published books and pamphlets in Japanese, and Japanese language and calligraphy cards, playing cards and tokens.

Dixon by Finklehoffe and John C. Monks, Jr. The papers also include screenplays, clippings, and scrapbooks from Finklehoffe's cadetship and career.

This collection is the papers of James Lewis Howe, professor of chemistry at Washington and Lee University (1894-1938), which include his correspondence concerning the Presbyterian Church and foreign missions, the Washington and Lee University chemistry department, the American Chemical Society and philately. Also included are notes on archival material for and typescript of Annals of Washington and Lee University during the administration of George Washington Custis Lee, 1871-1896 and addendum on the administration of William Lyne Wilson (1897-1900) and of acting president Henry St. George Tucker (1900-1901). There are also copies of chemistry class examinations from 1941-1950 and a course outline for chemistry class in 1949-1950.

Dr. Marguerite Roberts was a University of Richmond faculty member and dean of Westhampton College, and she was also a noted Thomas Hardy scholar. This collection includes years of research on Hardy and his contemporaries as well as his second wife, Florence Dugdale Hardy. Copies of Roberts' manuscripts for her dissertation, Thomas Hardy and the Theater; and her books, Tess and the Theater, Hardy's Poetic Drama and the Theater, and Florence Hardy and the Max Gate Circle, are included. The collection also contains Dr. Roberts' correspondence with publishers and her requests for permission to publish. She carried on a long correspondence with Mrs. Florence Hardy, Lady Tweedsmuir, and other Hardy scholars, in addition to letters from actors and producers.
