Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains both the handwritten and typed manuscripts of James Huffman's memoir, Ups and downs of a Confederate soldier. Huffman served in the 10th Virginia Infantry Regiment, Company I, during the American Civil War. The rest of the collection consists of correspondence between Huffman's son Oscar and others regarding the manuscript's publication and genealogical material.

Biographical / historical:

James Huffman was born January 31, 1840 in Page County, Va. He served in the 10th Virginia Infantry Regiment, Co. I during the American Civil War. On March 8, 1866, he married Mary Elizabeth Henton in Rockingham County, Va. They had nine children. Huffman died on April 14, 1922 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.

Oscar Caperton Huffman was born September 16, 1876 in Mt. Crawford, Virginia. He graduated from Washington and Lee University's law school in 1898. He died in New York City on May 5, 1941, barely 5 months after the release of his father's memoir.
