Carl von Lang-Puchhof thoroughbred racehorse portrait album, 1891/1911

The von Lang-Puchhof album (1891-1911; 0.25 cubic feet) consists of 165 racehorse photographs from a golden age of European racing before breeding was disrupted by the Great War. Most of the photographs are of mares, often with foals, in each case fully named with the identity of the sire provided. Two additional photographs are mounted on boards and laid in. The album was apparently compiled by or for owner and breeder, Carl von Lang-Puchhof.

Mary Beard Copper family photograph collection, 1860/1930

This photograph collection belonged to Mary Beard Copper, who was born December 26, 1874 at 13 East Washington Street, Lexington, Virginia, in which later became the county office building. She was the daughter of Jacob Beard and Helen Elizabeth Holden Beard, but was brought up by her father's second wife, Emma Laughlin Beard. They also lived at "Riverdell" in East Lexington. In 1903 she married Thomas James Copper, Jr. of "Riverside" at South River, Rockbridge County, Virginia, where they lived. Mary died a widow in Waynesboro, Virginia on May 19, 1963. Her only surviving child was Katherine Copper McConnell of Charlottesville, Virginia. This photograph collection is of people and places in Mary's life.

This collection contains an anonymous author's unpublished vernacular manuscript on equine health. This manuscript was likely used as a tool by veterinarians or educated farmers in western France in the middle of the eighteenth century. The manuscript is divided into two parts. The first and longer part occupies the first 178 pages and is in a single legible hand. The second part, likely in a different and somewhat later hand, comprises the last eight pages.

The Painted horses scroll (circa 1800s; 0.2 cubic feet) is written in Chinese, but is from Japan. Contents categorize horses according to "The five natures and ten coats: Wood, Fire, Earth, Metal, Water; Gray, Chestnut, Bay, Palomino, Bluish, Black, Skylark, Roan, Buckskin, 'Two-hair' [piebald?]." Text at the end of the scroll, just before the dragon, is a quotation from the Liexan Zhuan (Biographies of Exemplary Immortals), with some variations in wording from the original text. Said text praises the Yellow Emperor for being the first to understand and nurture horses, teaching them, and along the way, imbuing them with the spirit and mystical ways of the dragon.
