Background

Scope and content:

This photograph collection belonged to Mary Beard Copper, who was born December 26, 1874 at 13 East Washington Street, Lexington, Virginia, in which later became the county office building. She was the daughter of Jacob Beard and Helen Elizabeth Holden Beard, but was brought up by her father's second wife, Emma Laughlin Beard. They also lived at "Riverdell" in East Lexington. In 1903 she married Thomas James Copper, Jr. of "Riverside" at South River, Rockbridge County, Virginia, where they lived. Mary died a widow in Waynesboro, Virginia on May 19, 1963. Her only surviving child was Katherine Copper McConnell of Charlottesville, Virginia. This photograph collection is of people and places in Mary's life.

Acquisition information:
In 1978, Arnold Copper at 177 Main Street, East Hampton, New York 11937, a grandson of Mary Beard Copper, gave his grandmother's photograph collection to the Rockbridge Historical Society, Lexington, Virginia.
