Maps, ledgers and papers of the Erskine Coal & Land Co. which was headquartered in Staunton, VA. Named `Erskine', a common male family name of the Millers, a Staunton family of prominent businessmen and land speculators, it was a land company purchasing coal lands and renting them out on lease for a rate of royalty. There are also the papers, maps and ledgers of associated companies, including the Cranberry Land Co., the Fire Creek Coal & Coke Co., the Rock Lick Coal Co., the Stonewall Coal & Coke Co., the Thurmond Coal Co., and the Thurmond Land Co. All of these companies were developers of the coal fields of southern West Virginia, especially in the New River district.

Records of the Wanamie Mine and Glen Alden Coal Company, including employee reports, dust control reports, and Interior Board of Mine Operation Appeals decisions. Also included are materials relating to an exhibition titled "Men at the Coalface," consisting of drawings by Tisa von der Schulenburg.

Correspondence and other papers of Kemble White, one-time law partner of A.B. Fleming, specialist in oil and gas law, counsel for the West Virginia subsidiaries of Standard Oil (Hope Natural Gas, South Penn Oil, and Eureka Pipeline), charter member of the West Virginia Oil and Natural Gas Association, veteran of the Spanish-American War, one-time president of the West Virginia Bar Association; and the West Virginia University Alumni Association. Additional items include: White's notebooks from language and accounting classes taken at the University; correspondence dealing with Mrs. White's gardening activities; drafts of White's proposals for constitutional revision in West Virginia; a Spanish-American War Muster-roll for Company M, 2nd West Virginia Volunteers; and two diaries (ca.1868). Subjects include: oil, land titles and leases; Fairmont Coal and Coke Company; Twin Mountain Orchards; Monongahela Valley Traction Company; Twin Mountain and Potomac Railroad; West Virginia political campaigns; and constitutional revision in West Virginia. This collection consists mainly of business records of the United Pocahontas Coal Company of Crumpler, West Virginia (McDowell County), including a one-page typescript history of the company, bylaws (1915), business correspondence, and three blueprint maps.
