Background

Scope and content:

Includes 11 photographs taken at the campus walkout on August 21, 2023 and rally on August 23, 2023 organized by the West Virginia Campus Workers and West Virginia United Students' Union groups. These protests were carried out in response to the "WVU Transformation," $45 million budget cuts proposed by West Virginia University administration in the spring of 2023. The walkout photographs were taken on WVU's downtown campus near the Mountainair and feature protesters and protest signs. The rally photographs were taken of flyers distributed at the event.

Biographical / historical:

West Virginia Campus Workers (WVCW) is an alliance of West Virginia University employees committed to advancing social and economic justice on the WVU campus and in the university's employment practices. WVCW was established in response to WVU's proposed "Academic Transformation" in 2023, plans devised by the university administration to eliminate academic programs and faculty positions as a cost-saving measure.

The West Virginia United Students' Union (WVUSU) was established in the summer of 2023 by a small group of students concerned about the West Virginia University administration's plans to eliminate academic programs and faculty positions as a cost-saving measure. Their first public facing event, a campus-wide walkout, took place in the fall of 2023 and garnered national attention. As of the 2024-2025 school year, WVUSU remains active in campus affairs.
