Background

Scope and content:

Records of a survey of the South Park neighborhood of Morgantown, West Virginia. The project was led by local historian Dolores A. Fleming.

The collection includes:
1. National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) form of several pages for the South Park neighborhood,
2. slides of buildings in the neighborhood,
3. detailed slide show inventory,
4. "script" of slide show (on yellow paper),
5. photocopies of Sanborn maps with annotated slide numbers that correlate to the slide inventory (ca. 1906-1927),
6. color copy of booklet "Morgantown's Suburbs", and
7. original copy of brochure entitled "South Park" which includes a map of the neighborhood with alpha and numeric annotations coding blocks that correlate to the NRHP form (1982).

The narrative of the slide show was based on sources identified in the detailed slide show inventory.

Biographical / historical:

This survey project was led by local historian Dolores Fleming with assistance from students who were members of a semester long historic properties survey class. The class, funded by the state preservation office, was comprised of students majoring in history or landscape architecture. West Virginia University associate professor of history Dr. Barbara Howe assisted in this project by guiding the students in the process of research and gathering information for the NRHP nomination form. Before embarking on the survey Fleming garnered support from groups in the South Park community in order to obtain their cooperation.
