Background

Scope and content:

Papers of Glen H. Hiner, Jr., Senior Vice President and Group Executive of General Electric Plastics (1983-1991) and CEO of Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation (1992-2002). These papers document both his personal life and professional career with an emphasis on the latter.

Materials found in the collection include but are not limited to business publications, financial reports, correspondence, and photographs of various personal and business events. The collection also contains a large amount of publications and audiovisual material relating to Glen Hiner and the companies with which he was associated. Also included in the collection are a few personal belongings of Glen Hiner such as a high school letterman jacket, cuff links, and an assortment of awards, among other items.

Contains materials related to the education, military career, and business activities of Glen Hiner, Jr. The series mostly consists of papers related to the businesses with which Glen Hiner, Jr. was associated with, such as General Electrics and Owen Cornings.

This series contains family histories, family memorabilia, and other items with the focus mainly on the history of Glen Hiner's family up to the early 20th century.

Contains letters, postcards, and other correspondence with a focus on professional and business related topics. The postcards date from the 1930s through the 1970s with most of the business correspondence dating from ca. 1960s-2000s

Series contains corporate publications and books related to business anniversaries, annual/financial reports, and fact sheets. There are also a few of Hiner's personal books on topics such as mine safety, West Virginia history, and art.

The Media series contains 15 VHS tapes and 1 DVD. The VHS tapes consist almost entirely of interviews with Glen Hiner, Jr and other business related recordings. Topics of interviews include the business operations and philosophy of Hiner with the exception of 5 tapes regarding West Virginia University and a recorded movie. The 1 DVD is a nature program concerning environmental preservation.

The photograph series contains a mixture of personal and business related photographs. Half of these document the Hiner family, including their vacations; the other half document various business events held by the Owens Corning company.

Series contains numerous awards given to Glen Hiner, Jr. for his business accomplishments along with a few personal artifacts, such as a wallet, cuff links, and necklace.

The oversize series contains a variety of materials with a focus on framed certificates and photographs. This series also contains a letterman jacket and two letterman sweaters from Morgantown High School, two books, and diplomas for Dorothy Brown, mother of Glen Hiner, Jr.

Biographical / historical:

Glen H. Hiner, Jr. was born in Morgantown, West Virginia in 1935 to Glen H. Hiner, Sr. and Dorothy Brown Hiner. Glen Hiner, Jr. went on to graduate from Morgantown High School in 1952 and attended West Virginia University (WVU), graduating with a bachelor's in electrical engineering in 1957.

In that same year, Hiner secured a position working for General Electric (GE) where he continued to work for the next 35 years. During his time with GE he became the head of GE Plastics, growing the division from less than $1 billion in annual sales to over $5 billion by the time of his departure in 1992. After leaving GE, Hiner joined Owens Corning as CEO working for the company until his resignation in 2002.

Hiner remains an active member of numerous boards and serves as an advisor for various organizations. In 1994, Hiner was honored with the Dan Fox Lifetime Achievement Award from the Society of the Plastics Industry. He has served as director of the Dana Corporation, Prudential Insurance Company of America, and the Kohler Company. Hiner also serves as an advisor to the Boston Symphony Orchestra and the WVU Foundation.
