Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains motion pictures related to West Virginia and the greater Appalachian region. Mediums include news footage, documentary films, industrials and West Virginia University footage.

Although a single collection, this audiovisual content was acquired from a variety of sources, such as the U.S. Department of Agriculture, WVU-TV, Appalachian Film, and Monongalia County. Subjects include WVU sporting events, the coal mining industry and Appalachian culture, such as crafts, folk music and parades.

Collection highlights include WVU football games from as early as 1941, a 1918 World War I victory parade addended by future presidential nominee John W. Davis, and the First Annual Appalachian People's Music Fair of 1970.

Explores the economics and power politics of the coal industry and how they pervade the state of WV and affect the lives of the people.

A June, 1969 television program on the complexities of West Virginia's government, state and local, test the viewer with 33 questions on the constitution, three branches of government, city and county government, and voting. Interviews state leaders and political scientists from West Virginia University.

Focuses on a small snake-handling church in McDowell County, WV. Shows two serpent handling services and answers many of the questions concerning the religion and the people who practice it. Shows a rattlesnake hunt, the washing of serpents, the outdoor homecoming service, and an all-night prayer vigil held for the victim of a rattlesnake bite.

Investigates the Buffalo Creek Flood of Feb. 26, 1972, Logan County, West Virginia. Footage of the flood and of flood victims immediately following the flood is seen. Statements made by Governor Moore, the president of the Pittston Coal Company, and flood victims are included.

Documentary film on a state senate race in WV, focuses on candidate Warren R, McGraw. Filmed along the campaign trail, the movie concentrates on the candidate's problems, frustrations, and exhausting pace in his attempt to unseat an incumbent in the state legislature.

Shows what better roads and road improvement can do for West Virginia. Film used in conjunction with Road Bond Amendment in the 1968 election.

Film to encourage youth participation in 4-H Auto Safety Program

Describes the stark poverty and hopelessness of one million people living in the desolation of Appalachia as exemplified by the abandoned coal-mining community of white
sburg, KY. Pictures the worn faces and discouragement of the adults, the children who have scant prospects of gaining any education, and the broken remnants of buildings that serve as homes, pointing out that for these people Christmas is a barren experience in a country of affluence.

The film follows the parents of Coon Branch, a mountain community in McDowell County, WV, in their first community meeting concerning poor school systems and bad roads, to their pressures on the school board, the road commission and finally to the governor.

Portrays the abuses of the mining industry and their influence on the health and well being of the miners in West Virginia; reveals that mining is virtually the only employment opportunity in the area.

A variety of Appalachian residents discuss their attitudes towards life in Appalachian strip mining, economical, and industrial development, and the future quality of life in this region.

Discusses the poverty and problems of Appalachia, explaining that the land is rich with coal, yet its residents are denied adequate food, housing, and medical care. Focuses upon eastern Kentucky where mechanization of the mines is replacing people and jobs. Uses interviews with a local family to show how a lack of education and working skills makes these residents prisoners of the land.

Shows poor land owners fighting to obtain a law controlling strip mining, a process which damaged their houses and farms, and desecrated the beauty of the mountains. Shows the struggle within themselves and the opposing forces.

Youth of Appalachia talking about coal mining, education, heath facilities, recreation, job opportunities and politics demonstrate their own region.

Speaks of the beauty of the hills, the humanity of the people, and the attitudes of the mine operators. Arial photography is used to enhance a biologist's scientific explanation of what strip-mining does to the land. Filmed in Southwest Virginia, the film offers a look at some of the worst strip-mining in the region.

Portrait of a small town in the 1970s which focuses on its struggle to survive in a largely urban society. Interviews with townspeople present differing ideas on the traditional values and morality of this small town.

Coal mining gets "in ya blood" but the youth of Appalachia encounter the question of staying or leaving. Focuses on a teenager, Randy, with dreams of going to college rather than into the mines.

Examines the effects of rural poverty on a 16 year old boy, Paul Tabier, and his fatherless family. Their day to day struggles in Ohio's Appalachian area are eased by their deep religious convictions and love of the land.

Judge Wooten County judge of Leslie County KY, is living proof that the middle class American values and goals have not yet taken over in Appalachia. Footage of 4th July contest with hunting dogs and a coon.

Portrays the difficulties that an Appalachian family encounters in adapting to city living when lack of job opportunities forces them to move to Cincinnati Ohio.

Points out the dangers and foolishness of strip mining providing scenes of Appalachian land which has been defaced permanently as an example of the hazards of this process.

Focus on one family in 1790, who are lured by rich lands, down the Ohio river in a flatboat. Portrays the hardships of pioneer life, and the continuing search for new lands beyond the Mississippi.

Mountaineer Dillard Chandler is featured in film about folk music of NC Mountains although illiterate, he sings from memory the songs his father taught him. His music and that of his friends provide a musical history of the area.

Details the community function of the Highlander Folk School in Mont eagle, Tenn., and its early work in training union organizers and providing guidance to the miners and tetile workers of the Cumberland Mountains.

A documentary story of the Mississippi River. Traces the history of the Mississippi River and its tributaries: shows that the destruction of soil, floods, and the loss of lives and property; and emphasizes the need for conservation and rehabilitation.

Discusses the importance of folk music in the religious and social life of the Appalachian Mountains in Eastern Kentucky. Music is considered a gift from God and a celebration of life. Film shows typical scenes of the region, accompanied by regional music.

Discusses the real estate development of the Appalachian Mountains of North Carolina and Georgia. The mountain people tell of their opposition to this development and the problems which it has caused. These include higher property taes and destruction of the beauty of the land.

Film shows the spirit and faith of the people of the Old Regular Baptist Church and the impact their religion has on their lives. Widespread only among mountain people, this religion is uniquely a product of the Appalachian culture.

Master of the art of storytelling, Ray Hicks is a mountain farmer from Beach Mountain, North Carolina, who tells traditional folk tales of "Jack Tales." These tales have been passed on from generation to generation.

Follows the coal-mining process, showing how the coal is removed from the mine with the help of cutter bars, drills, dynamite, and conveyer belts, and how it is washed, relieved of impurities, sorted, and loaded on railroad cars. Discusses safety precautions taken by miners, shows the location of coal-producing areas in the United States, and discusses various uses of coal and its by products.

Lee Banks practices "old-timey farming", tilling the soil with his horse and wooden plow, and using methods barely different from his ancestors. The film is a tribute to a true mountaineer- a strong independent man who finds joy in his work and harmony with the land.

A film portrait of one of the remaining one room schoolhouses in Kentucky, where middle-aged teacher Harding Ison teaches 22 students in grades one through eight. " I just kinda let them go freely through the day," says Ison.

This film is a portrait of Clarence gray, a fifth generation herb doctor whom people call Catfish Man of the Woods. He sells a miture of roots and herbs called "bitters" for all types of ailments from rheumatism to heart trouble. Catfish comments freely about se, religion, and the way of the woods.

Dewey Thompson is an 80 year old chairmaker who does everything by hand; he even chops down trees. The film is about his simple lifestyle.

This film covers three craftsmen that were featured at the Morgan County, KY Sorghum Festival, a knife maker, a broom maker, and a woman who spins her own yarn on a spinning wheel. It details their work, then follows them to the fair where their work is displayed.

A documentary which probes the problem of water pollution in the coal industry. Explores the black-water problem and acid drainage, describing the technical processes necessary for a successful pollution-control program.

Appalachian mountain music in its traditional form springs from the land and the soul, the ancestry and uniqueness of mountain people. This presentation of mountain music is not an attempt to explain or analyze, but a sight and sound experience of mountain culture without narration.

In Ramsey, a small community in the coalfields of southwestern Virginia, the mountain people gather every Wednesday to do their trading. This business venture is more of a social event and people come for good deals and good times.

A mountaineer who "had rather make moonshine than go on welfare" relates his story. He tells of being sent up four times for making liquor, while IRS agents relate tales of tracking down still and making arrest.

In 1967, Eliot Wigginton and his Rabun Gap, Georgia high school class set out to record the lore, legends, and crafts of their Appalachian folk heritage. The edited original for this long version was re-edited in to a film clip, which was distributed by the News Service.
