Background

Scope and content:

Agricultural surveys taken of West Virginia counties during 1915-1916 and the late 1930s through the late 1960s; counties include: Greenbrier, Marshall, Jackson, Randolph, Harrison, Mineral, Hampshire, Morgan, Jefferson, Berkley, and Monroe. Most of the collection is comprised of individual farm surveys or inventories, both bound and loose manuscripts. Information about many of the counties' farms was utilized for a 1955 West Virginia Feed Production Study and a 1969 Rural Development Study, which was conducted by students at West Virginia University for the Department of Agricultural Economics. Series include: 1) Farm Surveys (1915-1942), 2) Records for a Rural Development Study (1955-1969), and 3) Miscellaneous Papers.

1) Farm Surveys (1915-1942) (Boxes 1, 2, 3, and 5) include information regarding the farm operator, landlord (if applicable), acreage, soil types, crop yields (both acreage and value), livestock and corresponding value, machinery, and farm expenses (ex. labor, repairs, supplies, taxes, etc). The first group of surveys, kept as loose manuscripts, was taken in 1915 and 1916, but do not consistently list the farms' locations. The inclusive dates for the bound volumes are 1936-1942 and include the following: Greenbrier, Harrison, and Randolph Counties (1936); Jackson, Marshall, and Monroe Counties (1936); Greenbrier and Marshall Counties (1936); Harrison County (1937); Jackson and Randolph Counties (1937); Marshall and Monroe Counties (1937); Greenbrier and Marshall Counties (1937); Jackson and Randolph Counties (1938); Harrison County (1938, 1940); Marshall County (1940, 1942) (Box 2); Greenbrier and Marshall Counties (1940) (Box 3).

2) Records for a Rural Development Study (1955-1969) (Boxes 3 and 4) regard a study initiated by the West Virginia University Department of Agricultural Economics, which addresses the changes that took place between 1955 and 1969, and utilized 1955 surveys taken for a West Virginia Feed Production Study. Farm surveys (1955) include Mineral, Hampshire, Morgan, and Jefferson Counties. Many Jefferson County files also include sketches. (Box 4) Farm surveys (1969) cover Hampshire, Berkley, and Morgan Counties (Box 3). Other papers include: blank inventory forms and miscellaneous agricultural production notes on the 1969 study; a typescript (1963) listing highlights of a rural development study; and a report (1964) to the West Virginia Rural Areas Development Committee, submitted by the Horizon Committee, on natural resources.

3) Miscellaneous Papers (Boxes 2 and 4) include copies of quadrangle maps for Mineral, Hampshire, Morgan, Jefferson, and Berkley Counties, as well as miscellaneous maps highlighting shale and lime segments. Also contains one issue of The West Virginia Legionnaire newspaper (1945/02/10).
