The papers of Hugh Ike Shott of Bluefield, W.Va. Mr. Shott was owner and publisher of The Blue Field Telegraph and the Sunset News. He was also owner of radio stations WHIS of Bluefield, and served as postmaster in Bluefield by appointments of Presidents T. Roosevelt and Taft. He was twice elected to the U.S. House of Representatives, 1928 and 1930, and in 1942 was elected to the U.S. Senate for the unexpired term of M. M. Neely. Mr. Shott was also a member of the W.Va. Semi-Centennial Commission, and the Republican State Committee.
Series I of the papers is general correspondence, including letters from Franklin D. Roosevelt, and Andrew Summers Rowan; 1893-1943; Series II, personal correspondence, 1910-1943; Series III general file A-Z (miscellaneous material), 1900-1945; Series IV, correspondence filed alphabetically by subject, 1905-1954, including census, clippings, election campaigns, newspapers, political, prohibition, speeches, War Finance, War Stamps, bonds and loans campaigns. Also included with the papers is an address book, note pad, appointment book, Journal of household and church expenses, and a diary of Mrs. H. I. Shott, 1910-1936. A photograph album of cottages at Old Sweet Springs, a short history of the Springs, and repair estimates. There are numerous certificates of recognition for his newspaper and other work and autographed photographs of U.S. Presidents, W.Va. Governors, U.S. and State government officials and prominent business men. See inventory for the list of names.
