Scope and content:

Papers regarding the Mountain State Forest Festival (Elkins) and the Upper Monongahela Valley Association. Includes clippings, news releases, letters, publications, and newspapers pertaining to the Forest Festival, and the involvement of the Upper Monongahela Valley Association in the Festival, during the years 1933 to 1941. Topics discussed include the coal and glass industry, rural electrification, and the representation of West Virginia industry at the Festival.

This series includes article clippings pertaining to the Forest Festival and coal mining/exhibits. Materials include pages from "Monongahela News" and "Mining Congress Journal," articles about coal mining, and articles about coal exhibits at the Forest Festival.

Included in this series are news releases from the Upper Monongahela Valley Association. These releases discuss industrial exhibits (coal and coal products, wood and wood products, and glass, etc.) that were displayed at the Forest Festival. These exhibits represented thirty manufacturers including the Upper Monongahela Valley Association, the Domestic Corporation of Fairmont, the Bowers Pottery Company of Mannington, the Louie Glass Company of Weston, and the Fairmont Aluminum Company, among others.

The two letters in this series are response correspondence to Mr. Critchfield regarding the processes for making glass and coke from the Master Marble Company and the Domestic Coke Corporation respectively.

This series contains numerous publications including "Monongahela News," "The Valley News," and "King Coal Holds Court in Northern West Virginia." Articles of interest include summaries of Forest Festival events, rural electrification, and the coal industry.

Included in this series are four issues of the Mountain State Forest Festival program. These programs are from 1933, 1937, 1938, and 1939. Each program booklet includes pictures of the Festival's Queen Silvia court, times and dates of Festival events, and advertisements for businesses in Elkins, West Virginia and other state businesses.

This series is composed of two publications: a booklet issued by the West Virginia Department of Agriculture which highlights numerous attractions around the state and a reprint of "Catalin: The Gem of Modern Industry" from "Modern Plastics Magazine" (featuring photos of products).

This series includes original newspapers with headlines relating to the Mountain State Forest Festival for the years 1937, 1938, and 1940. Articles in the newspapers pertain to the coronations of the Festival's queen and a summary of Festival events, including industrial exhibits regarding coal, oil, and gas, among others.

Biographical / historical:

Charles Sutton Critchfield (1901-1978) was a resident of Fairmont, West Virginia. He was likely employed by Monongahela West Penn Public Service Company, and his duties included company outreach, such as taking displays regarding coal to various events, including the Mountain State Forest Festival.
