- Abstract:
- Personal papers of Dr. Jacques Carmeleau Antoine (1906-1984) and his wife Caroline Wickliffe Antoine (1908-2000). Mr. Antoine was appointed Haiti's Ambassador to the U.S. in 1945 and was professor of literature at Howard University, Washington, D.C. Mrs. Antoine worked with the UN helping women of Africa, including the Congo. Includes correspondence, photographs, printed material, and other items. Subjects include trips taken by the Antoines, Jacques's career, and family matters. Other individuals mentioned include Caroline's parents, Minnie M. and Gustaves M. Wickliffe, as well as Jacques and Caroline's daughter, Claire Antoine. Correspondence includes postcards, greeting cards, and letters. Most letters are between Mr. and Mrs. Antoine, to and from Claire Antoine, and from Minnie Wickliffe. Subjects of the photos include Mrs. Antoine's American family, her brother Woodson Wickliffe, grandchildren, Mr. and Mrs. Antoine's trip to Egypt in 1964, and other subjects. Printed material includes photocopies of articles and webpages related to Mr. Antoine and pamphlets about the UN and the Congo.
