Background

Scope and content:

Research papers created and assembled by history professor Barbara Howe for a centennial history of the College of Arts and Sciences at West Virginia University, from its inception in 1867 through 1997. Includes five series: research files, interviews, faculty files, subjects, and sound recordings. Almost all material consists of photocopies.

This series includes research papers arranged by chronological period. Records for each period include chapter outlines with corresponding primary source material, such as copies of pages from reports, course catalogs, yearbooks, newspapers, etc. Periods include beginnings (1867-1901), the Raymond years (1895-1901), Purinton as Dean and President (1901-1911), and so on. It also includes an original West Virginia University course catalog from 1898 (box 1).

This series includes transcripts of interviews conducted for the centennial history.

This series includes lists of faculty, their publications, and a few biographical narratives, including ones for Louis Watson Chappell and Wilson Porter Shortridge.

This series includes files of photocopies of research material, including, among other material, a manuscript by history professor James Morton Callahan entitled "Presidents of West Virginia University: Sketches of Their Educational Service" (1944); a manuscript by Callahan entitled "Brief Historical Sketch of West Virginia University" (undated); a syllabus for "Humanities 1 and 1, Introductory General Course" (1947); a research file on mathematics professor Margaret Buchanan Cole (ca. 1870-2000); and a report of the Dean of Arts and Sciences (1933); and degree and enrollment figures (1895-1951).

This series includes 12 cassette recordings of interviews conducted for the College of Arts and Sciences centennial history project.
