Background

Scope and content:

Civil War letters from David Riel and Newton Van Leer of Company G, 15th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry and Charles W. Elliot of Company A, 11th West Virginia Volunteer Infantry. Most letters are to Sarah Riel of Wood County. Subjects include defense of the B&O Railroad, the kidnapping of Union generals Crook and Kelley, military action near Richmond, and military hospitals. Two postwar letters concern West Virginia emigrants to the West. This collection includes both original letters and a complete set of facsimiles.
