Scope and content:

Series I, Literary Drafts, consists of a typescript draft for DeBord's book on St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Series II, Genealogical Records, contains a paper on the Lambert family written by Martha Brown DeBord and various research notes and materials.

Biographical / historical:

Martha Brown DeBord, daughter of Charles Cassell Brown and Mary Virginia Lambert Brown, was born in Rural Retreat, Virginia on 14 February 1921. She attended Rural Retreat public schools, Marion College and Roanoke College. After her father died she left college to manage the family farm. She married Joe DeBord and raised three children. She assumed management of the DeBord Mill when her husband died in a farm accident in 1964.

Apart from her agricultural work, DeBord served on numerous education committees and boards including the Wythe County School Board (1964-1997), State Vocational Education Advisory Board, Virginia School Board Association, and Marion College Board. She also was actively involved with St. Paul Lutheran Church as organist, pastoral council member, and historian. DeBord died 27 April 2004.
