Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains athletic programs, brochures, photographs, tickets and other material collected by Randall S. Hawthorne, class of 1967, documenting the track and field and cross country programs, and to a lesser extent football at the College of William and Mary. The bulk of the collection consists of track and field programs including the Colonial Relays, Penn Relays, and the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. The collection also includes color and black and white photographs featuring the College of William and Mary men's and women's track and cross country teams. The photographs feature individual shots of runners as well as the team at various meets, including the Colonial Relays and the Colonial Athletic Association Championships. Annual brochures for the track and field and cross country teams at the College, containing information about the team's schedule, roster, and facts about William and Mary athletics, are also part of the collection. The collection also holds track programs from the 1996 Olympics Games in Atlanta and William and Mary football programs from the 1950s and 1960s.

Material is added to the collection on an ongoing basis. Please see Series 3 for additions to the collection that have not been interfiled.

This series consists of athletic programs, clippings, brochures, and other publications related to cross country and track, mostly featuring the teams from the College of William and Mary.

This series consists of black and white as well as color photographs of track and field and cross country meets. The bulk of the photographs feature members of the mens and womens teams from the College of William and Mary at meets such as the Penn Relays, the Colonial Relays, and the Colonial Athletic Association Championships.

This series consists of accessions that have not been integrated into the existing collection. Please consult a staff member for further assistance.

The bulk of this accession contains photographs and clippings related to the track and cross country teams at the College of William and Mary. Both the mens and womens track and cross country teams are represented. Also included in the accession are William and Mary football programs, publications from the Colonial Williamburg Foundation from the 1980s, and publications related to the 300th Anniversary of the College of William and Mary from circa 1993.

Contains football programs from William and Mary games against George Washington in 1961 and 1963; Program and results from the 2012 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Louisville, Kentucky; Program from the 2012 CAA Cross Country Championships in Williamsburg, Virginia; Program for the 11 Annual Spider Alumni Open cross country meet in Richmond, Virginia on September 1, 2012; and a manuscript written by G. Curtis Jones about the death of his son Peter G. Jones, who ran cross country and track for William and Mary from 1967-1971, at the age of 30.

Contains William and Mary football programs from the 10/21/1944 game against Richmond Airforce Base; 10/2/1954 game against Pennsylvania; 10/19/1963 game against Virginia Tech; 9/26/1964 game against Navy; and the 10/9/1965 game against Navy.

Contains results for William and Mary freshman cross country team meet rusults from 1963, 1965-1967, as well as an autographed copy of High School Runners, Fall 2000, signed by Alan Webb, the first high school runner to break the 4 minute mile.

Contains programs and results from the 2013 NCAA Cross Country Championships in Terre Haute, Indiana, as well as a program from the Colonial Athletic Association Championships at Cockeysville, Maryland.

Contains programs, tickets, and other material related to the football and track teams at the College of William and Mary. Also included is a program from the 68th Annual Portsmouth Sports Club Jamboree in January 2014.

Mix of sleeves with just negatives, and sleeves with negatives and photographs. Many photographs sleeves are labeled with the name and date of the event. One bundle labeled as "unknown." 3 small containers of slides, dated and with name of event.

A bib number used by a runner was pulled from this collection and was added to the University Archives Artifact Collection (UA 13) on 3/11/2011.

Artifacts have been separated and transferred to the University Archives Artifact Collection (UA 13). Artifacts with descriptions include W & M Tribe Club Window Decals (UA 2010.679.01ab), Athletics department protest T-shirt (UA 2014.061.01)

A poster for the William and Mary game versus Virginia Polytechnical Institute in the Holiday Bowl sometime between 1946 and 1950 was pulled from this collection and added to the University Archives Poster Collection on 8/06/2013.

Biographical / historical:

Randall S. (Randy) Hawthorne was a student at the College of William and Mary from 1963 to 1967, graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree. He went on to obtain his J.D. in 1970 and a M.L.T. in 1971, both from the College of William and Mary. In 1970, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant, U.S. Army Reserve. After leaving William and Mary, he served in the U.S. Army and eventually worked in a private accounting practice in Williamsburg, Virginia. Hawthorne remained connected to track and field at William and Mary after graduation, creating Track Talk, a newsletter for William and Mary track alumni in 1976, as well as raising funds to benefit the track and field program. In 2008, Hawthorne was awarded the William and Mary Alumni Medallion, given by the William and Mary Alumni Association for his service and dedication to the College.
