Background
- Scope and content:
-
Jeffrey B. Trammell's papers document his work as National Chair of Business Outreach and liaison for gay and lesbian constituents for the Al Gore/Joe Lieberman presidential campaign of 2000. The collection does not contain information regarding Jeffrey Trammell's personal life or his time serving as College of William and Mary's Rector.
Correspondence between Trammell and his colleagues demonstrate the role he played in fundraising for the Gore campaign, as well as his political activism regarding equal rights for gay and lesbian citizens. Newspaper and magazine articles collected by Jeffrey Trammell depict public opinion on the Gore campaign and LGBTQ issues, while campaign literature focuses on Gore's stance of equal rights for the LGBTQ community.
Internal documents, such as campaign business and fundraising planning documents, agendas, manuals, speeches, research notes on LGBTQ rights, donor lists, and endorsements, provide insight into what goes on behind-the-scenes in a presidential campaign and the work conducted by Jeffrey Trammell in an effort to elect Gore for president. Handwritten notes by Trammell are included, largely consisting of 'To-Do' lists, campaign plans, and business contacts.
Memorabilia has been removed from the collection, including Gore campaign buttons and bumper stickers, as well as "John Kerry for President" stickers and added to Artifacts collection.
Series 1 includes correspondence sent and received by Jeffrey B. Trammell in regards to planning the Gore 2000 campaign, primarily consisting of printed e-mails from colleagues, internal facsimiles and memorandums, as well as requests from organizations for Gore to speak at fundraisers and "Thank-you" letters to campaign donors. The series is arranged chronologically.
Series 2 contains internal documents created and collected by Jeffrey Trammell for the Gore 2000 campaign. The series consists of materials related to Clinton/Gore 1996 campaign research, Business Outreach Committee, National Gay and Lesbian Committee, fundraising events, the Democratic National Convention Delegate selection, and brief instructions for the Florida ballot recount. The majority of these are planning documents, some of which are handwritten notes by Jeffrey Trammell. Research files collected by Trammell consist of literature, news articles, and legislation on LGBTQ issues. Documents and literature sent from White House staff to Trammell are also included.
Series 3 contains lists of donors to the Gore campaign, as well as directories of business contacts and potential supporters, including LGBTQ elected officials across the United States. The series is arranged in the order the creator sent the items.
Series 4 consists of individual pledges of endorsement for the Gore/Lieberman campaign. It is arranged by groups who endorsed Gore, including Gay and Lesbian Lawyers for Gore, Gays and Lesbians for Gore, and predominantly Business Leaders for Gore.
Series 5 consists of voting handouts, as well as Pro-Al Gore, Anti-George Bush and Anti-Bill Bradley candidate campaign literature.
Series 6 contains newspaper and magazine articles, some of which are printed, full and partial newspapers, and press releases discussing Gore's campaign and current LGBTQ issues. The series is arranged by type and then chronologically.
Box 15 contains whole and partial newspapers, mostly from The Washington Blade, a popular news resource for the LGBTQ community.
