Biographical / historical:

Alexander Hugh Holmes Stuart was born in Staunton, Va. in 1807 and was educated at the College of William and Mary and at the University of Virginia. Served in Virginia House of Delegates and in U. S. House of Representatives. Served as Secretary of the Interior in 1850-1853 and in the Virginia Senate. Member of the "Committee of Nine" to persuade Congress and the President to exclude clauses from Underwood Constitution. Rector of the University of Virginia.
