Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of two letters from J.J. Lankes to Richard E. Fiscus, Buffalo, New York, with their envelopes. The earliest, December 27, 1920, discusses the cost of ordering and producing a bookplate based upon the amount of work required and the design.

In the second letter, January 6, 1921, Lankes offers to "fix up a print of the Philosopher adding Ex-libris and your name and have a zinc etching made for about $ 20.OO," or to do one entirely in wood for about twice that amount. The second letter includes a tiny sketch of the proposed bookplate. Also included is an example of a Lankes bookplate with a farmhouse and snow scene dated [1921 ?].

This collection was purchased by the Library from Thomas G. Boss Fine Books, Boston, Massachusetts, on July 20, 1990.
