Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of 27 sermons delivered by the Rev. Russell Cecil(1853-1925), 1911-1924, mostly to the Second Presbyterian Church of Richmondwhere he served as minister beginning in 1901. Several other sermons were delivered to the Railroad Young Men's Christian Associationin Richmond.

Also included in the collection is a list of Virginia Girl Scoutsservice activities, ca.1942-1943, and his report, "A Brief Historical Statement of the Enlistments and Activities of the Second Presbyterian Church, Richmond, VA, in the World War of 1917-1918," written 21 December, 1920. The report lists all members of the congregation engaged in over-seas service and gives an account of the activites of the church at home during the war. All material is arranged in chronological order. A biographical sketch of the Rev. Russell Cecilcan be found in the control folder.
