- Biographical / historical:

During the early days of the University of Virginia, there were no hospital facilities for ill students, who were typically attended in their rooms by a medical faculty member or local physician. In 1857, the Board of Visitors allocated funding for the construction of a student infirmary, which, once completed, would become one of the first academic student health centers in the country. The Infirmary was located just east of the south end of the Lawn. The structure still exisits and is known today as "Varsity Hall." Responsibility for the care of sick students lay with the medical faculty and the Infirmary was used for both outpatient and inpatient student health services until the opening of the University Hospital, which then became the location of inpatient care.
By the 1930s, due to growing University enrollment, the medical faculty realized a more formal system of student health care was needed. After a successful appeal to the President of the University, a Committee on Student Health was appointed. On this Committee's recommendation, the Department of Student Health was created in 1938 under its first director, Dr. Andrew D. Hart, Jr. Student Health was located in the Entrance Building (now known as the Corner Building, which currently houses the University's Women's Center).
As UVA continued to grow during the mid-20th century, so too did the Department of Student Health. Additional staff were hired to meet the demands of rising student enrollment and increasing numbers of clinic visits. After UVA became fully coeducational in 1970, gynecology services began to be offered to meet the needs of the new group of female students. During the 1980s, the mission of Student Health expanded to include health education programs and peer educator initiatives.
By this time the physical facilities of the Department of Student Health were proving inadequate, and planning began for the construction of a new building. In 1989, the Elson Student Health Center was completed on Brandon Ave, where the Department has been located for over three decades. A new UVA Student Health and Wellness Center is scheduled to be completed in 2021.
- Custodial history:
-
Records transferred by Caroline Walters from UVA Records Management to the Claude Moore Health Sciences Library on 30 April 2018.
- Processing information:
-
The records creators used a file identification system under which different policy- and procedure-related documents were organized. While this arrangement has been adjusted slightly, where possible folders retain their original titles. Physical folders are also marked with the original coded label (e.g. AIII or BI).
- Arrangement:
-
Records are generally organized according to the Records Retention and Disposition Schedules Series maintained by the Library of Virginia (LVA). When necessary, additional subdivisions have been created for materials that do not have clear equivalents in the LVA resources. When possible, the original organization of materials was taken into consideration--see series-level Arrangement notes for more information.
Annual reports are arranged in chronological order by the date of creation for the reports.
The correspondence and subject files are arranged into subseries for each Director. The subseries are arranged chronologically by the date that each Director began his or her term. Beginning and end dates of the Directors' terms are given after his or her name in the subseries title.
The materials in this series come from a historical file labeled "Development" that was maintained by the Department of Student Health. The original organization of the materials has been preserved. The files are arranged chronologically by the date of creation for the materials they contain.
The photographs and negatives are arranged alphabetically by title.
The public relations files are arranged chronologically. Due to the small amount of materials, no subseries are used to divide content according to types of materials (e.g. clippings collections and press releases).
The files are arranged in the series alphabetically by their title.
Materials in this series are arranged into subseries based on categories used by the records creators. The arrangements of the files in the subseries vary.
Materials in this subseries were designated A.II and A.III ("Administrative policies"), A.IX ("Student Health Regulations for Nursing Students"), and B.I ("Student Health Services") under the original organization system. As these categories all seemed to pertain to Administrative policies and operating procedures, they were combined into this subseries.
Most materials in this subseries were designated A.VIII ("Hospital Relationships") under the original organization system. Two folders with similar content (and no original labels) were also combined into this subseries.
Materials in this subseries were designated B.III ("Consultation Services") under the original organization system.
Materials in this subseries were designated B.IV ("Health Supervision and Prevention") under the original organization system. This subseries contains a subset of files originally identified B.IV-3 ("Health Supervision and Prevention: Infectious Disease Control").
Materials in this subseries were designated A.III ("Tuberculosis Control Program") under the original organization system. An additional file pertaining to the Tuberculosis Control Program but originally filed under A.VIII ("Hospital Relationships") is also included in this subseries.
The course schedules and catalogs are arranged into files. The files are then arranged chronologically by date of creation.
Files are arranged chronologically within the series. Sub-series are not used due to the small amount of materials in this record group.
The reports are arranged into files. The files are then arranged chronologically by their date of creation. When a report is reoccurring, all of the reports in that series are placed together in a single file.
The records in this series are arranged into files and/or subseries according to committee. The materials are then arranged alphabetically by committee title. The arrangements of the files within subseries vary.
