Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of digital recordings, transcripts, and related news articles created by the University of Virginia School of Law. The School's communications department published these files on Law School websites and third-party platforms such as YouTube and SoundCloud.

The recordings document events at the School of Law, including lectures, symposia, commencement ceremonies, student orientations, moot court competitions, and alum meetings. Also, some recordings shared and promoted the work of the Law School community with remote tours, podcasts, special-interest stories, mock classes, and interviews with faculty and students. Together, these files document the day-to-day life of the School during the time period covered, and the School's public response to significant historical developments (e.g., the 2008 financial crisis, the 2017 Unite the Right Rally, and the COVID-19 pandemic).

Most of the materials in this collection are digital video and audio files. However, it also includes .pdf, .docx, and .html files containing related transcripts and news articles. Some audio and video files published by the communications department are missing, but transcripts for many of those missing files are included in this collection.

The resolution and quality of the video and audio files in this collection varies. Archivists downloaded many of the files directly from the Internet, or they were produced using early digital recording devices.

Acquisition information:
Archivists at the University of Virginia Law Library gathered the files in this collection from multiple sources between 2009 and 2026. They downloaded some files directly from the Internet and recieved others from the University of Virginia School of Law's communications department.
Processing information:

Whenever possible, archivists at the University of Virginia Law Library described items in the finding aid inventory with the original titles and content notes created by the Law School's communications department.

Arrangement:

Digital and audio files are grouped and stored together according to the year of the event they document or the year of their creation. In the finding aid inventory, they are listed in chronological order. When dates are uncertain, archivist have done their best to approximate dates and group files according to those approximations.

Accruals:

Staff at the University of Virginia Law Library periodically gather and add new files to this collection.
