Background

Scope and content:

This collection contains Jane Florence Connor's autograph album (1857-1946). The album contains two original watercolors by Johnston as well as ink drawings, and calligraphy. Also included are numerous autographs, well-wishes, notes, and drawings from numerous Philadelphia-area friends of the Connor family, some of whom are connected to Johnston's circle.

Biographical / historical:

Jane Florence Connor was born on November 2, 1857 in Pennsylvania to John Henry Connor Jr. and his wife, Jane. John Henry Connor, Jr. was a close friend of John R. Johnston, a famed American panoramic painter, photographer, and photographic colorist based in Baltimore. Jane married Charles Clifford Riggs in 1882. The couple lived in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She died at the age of 88 on June 9, 1946 in Germantown, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. She was interred alongside her husband in Langhorne, Bucks County, Pennsylvania.
