Abstract:
The collection is part of the Publications Archive, and is comprised of archival copies of all Bulletins / Calendars / VMFA Magazines published by the museum since 1940. The publishing frequncy has changed many times (monthly, quarterly, bi-monthly) and the title changed three times, but the publication has always served to document the daily activities at the museum, including exhibitions, tours, programs, lectures, and more.

Background

Scope and content:

The collection's inclusive dates are 1940-present. The publishing frequncy changed many times, as did the numbering, and the title, which changed from Bulletin to Calendar in 1995, and then to VMFA Magazine in 2009.

This series is comprised of Bulletins, which were published from October 1940 to August 1995. They were published monthly, except for June, July, and August, from 1940 until 1984. From 1985 on, the Bulletin was published bi-monthly. The format and size of the Bulletin changed frequently over the years. Two-color printing was introduced in 1982, and full color printing (cover only) was introduced in the May-June 1995 issue.

This series is comprised of Calendars, which were published bi-monthly from September 1995 to December 2008. For the duration of its print run, only the cover was printed in full color.

This series is comprised of VMFA Magazine issues, which has been published since January 2009 and is still in print. The issues are published in full-color, but the publication frequency has changed many times over the years.

Custodial history:

The collection was transferred from the Library. Accretions are added regularly when new materials are published.

The archives strives to retain a minimum of 5 copies of Bulletins / Calendars / VMFA Magazines.

The collection is organized into three series, and items are arranged chronologically within each series.
