Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of publicity material as well as a piece of track from the MAGLEV project that took place at Old Dominion University from 1999 through 2003.

Includes video clips and a PowerPoint presentation on the status of the MAGLEV project.

Biographical / historical:

The Magnetic Levitation (MAGLEV) Transportation Project was developed in the late 1990s at Old Dominion University (ODU) to improve the mass transit situation in Hampton Roads. Construction on the project began in 1999 with the first piece of track laid along what once was 46th Street on the ODU campus. There were several stops planned along the track between Powhatan Apartments to the future Ted Constant Convocation Center in the University Village. Originally planned to open in the fall of 2002, the project ran into several delays and eventually shut down in 2003. There were a few attempts to revive the MAGLEV project over the next 15 years, and all of the track except for the piece over Hampton Boulevard was taken down in 2023 to make way for the future Biology Building.

Acc. 2023.024 was given by Ceceilia Turrietta on 6/12/2023 and Acc. 2023.026 was transferred from Facilities Management on 7/24/2023.
