Background

Scope and content:

This collection is composed of material pertaining to the celebration of the centennial of Lees-McRae College founded by Washington and Lee alumnus Rev. Edgar Tufts. The collection contains a Lees-McRae College Founder's Day package, including an autographed copy of the Cenntenniel Poem by Fred Chappell. The package also includes documents related to the establishment of Edgar Tufts Day in the town of Banner Elk and Avery County, such as copies of correspondence as well as a booklet on the event.

Edgar Tufts was the founder of Lees-McRae College and a 1894 alumnus of Washington and Lee University.

Biographical / historical:

Rev. Edgar Tufts was born December 4, 1869 and died January 6, 1923. He was a 1894 alumnus of Washington and Lee University, later graduating from Union Theological Seminary in 1897.

He founded The Elizabeth McRae Institute, later named Lees-McRae Institute in 1900 in Banner Elk, North Carolina in affiliation with the Presbyrterian Church. In 2000, Lees-McRae College celebrated it centennial, and the Town of Banner Elk established September 26 as Edgar Tufts Day in perpetuity.
