Background

Scope and content:

This collection consists of a scrapbook compiled by Charles "Cookie" Walker documenting his athletic accomplishments while a student at both Lylburn Downing School in Lexington, Virginia and Virginia State College (now University) in Petersburg. The scrapbook includes rosters, school yells, photographs, clippings, certificates, and programs for sporting events. The scrapbook is dated 1948-1955. Due to its fragility, the scrapbook was disbound and pages foldered in effort to ensure its preservation. The front and back covers were kept.

Biographical / historical:

Charles "Cookie" Walker was born on February 26, 1931 in Rockbridge County, VA. He attended Lylburn Downing School in Lexington and graduated from Virginia State College (now Virginia State University). Walker also served as a 2nd Lieutenant in the United States Army. He died on May 17, 1964 at the age of 33.
